Last night our good friend Leo lost his battle with cancer, but is rejoicing in heaven. We have only known Leo for the last year, but my boys and Mark just fell in love with him. A career solider, who was the same age as me. When we first met himand his wife, Marcie, he was about two years into his battle and he fought it hard. Never giving in, never giving up. Continuing to be the best dad and husband he could. We had a blast camping and visiting Magic Kingdom with them in October. Leo kept an upbeat spirit and knew that this was all a part of God's plan for his life, although none us understand it.
Going through this, and watching this family lose a best friend and father, makes us reflect upon our own lives. What would we give up for "just one more day"? Is this rat race we find ourselves in really worth it? He who has the most toys doesn't win anything. It also makes me realize that some things as just simply out of my control. It would not have mattered if Leo was a CEO instead of a solider- he would still have had cancer. If he was a millionaire or had the best health insurance in the world. This experience has sparked many a conversation with the boys- they are friends with both of Leo's boys (8 & 3). So take a minute today (or maybe longer) and hug those close to you, because it really is all in God's hands and not ours. And that's okay, because He is a lot smarter than any of us!
